Sales of Salvia Surge In Light of Miley Cyrus Video

Most of us have seen or heard about that controversial video former Hannah Montana star, Miley Cyrus taking hits from a bong filled with salvia, an herbal drug that’s legal in most states, but now raising concerns by lawmakers and parents alike.
Since that video surfaced, sales of salvia have gone up three times. One politician in California, where Cyrus was captured smoking it, is now calling for an all-out ban.

“The affects that it produces are completely different than any other drug we really know about,” said Dr. Adi Jaffe, an addiction psychologist out of Los Angeles.

Speaking via Skype Dr. Jaffe said depending on how you use it, the effects of salvia hits you within 30 seconds, but what you’ll feel for the next 15 or so minutes that it lasts is nothing like the euphoric highs associated with other drugs.

“It causes discomfort, depression, anxiety – not exactly the kinds of things you really want to do drugs because of,” he said.

Which is probably why, he says, there hasn’t been much concern to ban it, until now?

Even before the infamous Miley Cyrus video he says more and more clips started popping up on You-Tube of people trying it and Cyrus’ public use has taken it to the next level.

“No doubt when someone as young as Miley Cyrus, who has fans who are 13-14 years old, I’m pretty sure we’re going to get parents even more involved,” Jaffe said.

Here’s the good news, the high you get from this herbal drug, that’s similar to mint leafs, is so uncomfortable he said, most try it once and never use it again, so abuse is really not really a concern.

What has him alarmed are the potential risks people may take while under its influence.

“This is an extreme drug that really changes your perception of reality,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there is bill to make this drug Illegal in a month or so.”

Jaffe said if there is any good to this video surfacing, it could be a great tool for parents to get the conversation started about drugs.

Miley Cyrus’ bong-smoking activities have caused a rise in sales of the herbal drug she was smoking.

The 18-year-old was recently spotted smoking the legal drug salvia divinorum and sales have increased up to three times in some places.

According to TMZ, several stores in LA have seen sales radically increase and some people have even asked for ‘the stuff Miley was smoking’ when they into the stores.

One shop employee said to the US website: ‘Salvia is one of those things that you only try once because it is so intense.’

There has been discussions about banning the drug in California as it is already illegal in 15 states.

Miley Cyrus gives boost to sales of Salvia. Video footage posted on the internet show the 18-year-old singer-and-actress inhaling smoke from a bong – a filtration device for smoking – at a party held at her Los Angeles home on November 28, before bursting into giggles.

According to gossip website TMZ, the smoke comes from a natural herb called salvia, which has psychedelic qualities.

In the clip, Miley takes a hit then says: “OK I’m about to lose it now. I’m having a little bit of a trip right now.”

With music blaring in the background, the ‘Last Song’ star later mistakenly identifies one of the party guests as her former boyfriend Liam Hemsworth.

She laughs: “Oh my God! He looks so much like him! He looks so much like Liam. Is that me tripping? He doesn’t look like Liam at all? Dude, that looks just like Liam!”

It is believed the footage was stolen or copied from a camera belonging to a friend of Miley’s.

The former ‘Hannah Montana’ star’s “honorary godmother” Dolly Parton recently admitted she was worried about the people influencing the teenage star’s behaviour.

Dolly said: “I think she’s just in a crosswind trying to overcome the ‘Hannah Montana’ little girl and trying to become a young woman.

“I don’t know if she’s surrounded by people that are helping her to not make the wise decisions…”

Report: Salvia sales up after Miley Cyrus bong-smoking video – Los Angeles Times

 In the wake of a video showing Miley Cyrus smoking a bong, sales of salvia divinorum jumped at some Los Angeles-area head shops, according to TMZ, which spoke to several of the legal outlets over the weekend.

Sources told the website Friday that the just-turned-18-year-old was not smoking pot, but rather the hallucinogenic salvia, which is legal to possess in California, though illegal to sell to minors.

The inexpensive herb, also known as “Magic Mint” or “Sally-D,” can cause hallucinations “innocent and quaint” or “frightening and nauseating,” according to WebMD.

Anthony Adams, the onetime state assemblyman who tried to get salvia classified as a controlled substance in 2007, told TMZ on Saturday that it was irresponsible of the “Hannah Montana” star to  experiment with the herb — not to mention let a friend document it — because it can make a person do “incredibly crazy things.”

“Miley is a star,” Adams said, “and young kids are going to emulate her behavior.”

Looks like he was right: Some customers over the weekend were asking for “the stuff Miley was smoking,” TMZ said.

See, she really is a role model.
